I left on Friday and came back today. My favorite time to leave is 11a, that way I get there before the sun goes down including whatever breaks I may need to take. I don't like leaving too early because I like having a good nights sleep and waking up without an alarm etc on days with long drives.

I've done the 11:30pm departure before, that SUCKED. Oh man I hate falling asleep when driving. Pretty much there are like no cars on the road, just a bunch of 18 wheelers. I say it cuts about 1/2 hr to 1hr. I got to LA around 4:30-5am and then fought traffic from around there.

Anyways watch out around Stockdale area. They are ALWAYS patrolling around there. The stupidest part is that I totally forgot and got flagged for 114 at around 4pm. Argg...

If you leave around 11 am, how is traffic in LA?

Amazingly, I had almost NO problems back and forth, I think it was because of the holiday weekend. There was however massive traffic going the opposite way of me.

I'd rather sit through traffic and get somewhere as opposed to driving 1/2 awake at night...

you'll most likely hit afternoon rush hour, depending on which part of LA your heading to and the day of the week. The night drives are the best time but it sux to be tired while driving and after you get there.

I think leaving just about anytime is okay traffic-wise. When I go to So Cal, I usually just leave right after work, around 6 or 7 PM, but that's mostly a matter of convenience rather than actual preference. I normally hit a little bit of traffic on the 101, but it's not too bad.

If you're going to San Diego, I wouldn't worry too much about the traffic in LA. Traffic on the 5 in So Cal is generally relatively light during all times of day. The only potential trouble spot is downtown LA, where the 5 passes near the 10 and 110, but even that's not too bad...it's only for a short stretch. Just don't take the 405, because there's always a good chance of traffic there.

Going to San Diego is an easy drive traffic-wise...I'd just leave whenever you're comfortable with.

Either early (7-9 am) or 1-3 pm. I usually get there in 6.5 hours with a little speeding.

Also here's a BIG tip; when you are going up Grape vine, I think it's the Lebec exit, but find the Arco station up there. THE BEST place to gas up. Last time i went Premium was 1.75 !!!!

I've never seen gas so cheap ANYWHERE. I think they are cash only so have some cash on hand.
