Default I need some advice about roads to check out while in California.

Thanks to the very wonderful thread that Josh posted entitled "useful links" I have been reading about roads in California instead of working today. hehe

But I am having a hard time deciding which roads are a "must". I would like to take the Tioga Pass on the way there (I here it is a pretty good roller coaster ride), and we will probably have to check out the scenic Hwy. 1 on the way home. But what other roads out of the list below should we check out while in Cali.?

If you have been on any of these roads please comment. If you have another road... well convince me that it is a must; there are too many good choices and I just can't decide.

I would really appreciate any advice, and/or opinions.

If you are staying around the Bay Area or Monterey area after the LS event, I am sure that some locals may be available to go driving with you. there are many roads in the Santa Cruz mountains for you to enjoy! (That range extends from South of Santa Cruz up into the San Francisco Peninsula)

Highway 236 is best done on the weekdays as it is the primary route for tourists and campers into Big Basin Park. Highway 9 has many "must drive' parts to it.

i am sure others will have more info for you. Look forward to meetig you next week!

Yes... We have to go on a group drive after the event.
Right now I am pushing my luck to get everything tied up so that I can leave town (this trip is all last minute) so I can't plan anything before the event, but once I'm out of here I will be too far away for my clients to bug me and we will have as much time as necessary. We kinda plan on taking the trip at a whim (meaning not planning much) but it would be nice to have a good idea as to where to go etc. What roads are awesome etc etc. And a group drive with you guys on Tuesday sounds awesome!

Wow. thanks that is the kind of information I was looking for. I hadn't even checked the elevations to take snow into effect.

Living in Austin I don't think about snow all that often. It has snowed here once in the last 11 years. We will most likely come up the coast, and avoid that whole other side of the state.

Check out Sunset Drive in Asilomar (Pacific Grove side of Peninsula) which also leads to 17 mile drive which is a must. These roads like most on the Peninsula are not for enjoying high speeds but rather driving incredibly slow gazing off at the coast line and scenery which includes a ton of deer. These roads are about 10 minutes or less from Blue Fin Cafe and I can tell you how to get there when we meet at Blue Fin. Also, the 152 between the 101 and the 5 is a really nice drive! Although, that kind of takes you out of the way from the area. Have fun!

John, Silver and Yu888 have it right... there are many excellent drives within an hour of LS. Here is some info on the roads you listed...

Hwy 32, Hwy 49 are absolutely awesome but they are many hours north of LS and will likely be better as drives during S2K Days '02.
PineHurst rd., Hwy 236, hwy 35, Hwy 9 and a whole bunch of other roads are in the Santa Cruz mountains and they are the local stomping ground here in the Bay Area... Most of us here know these roads very well and I highly recommend a "Stroll" thru the area.
Mt Diablo and Lick observatory offer tremendous views at the tops but I wouldnt recommend them for a spirited drive, only as a destination.
Angeles Crest Highway is in SoCal and i would highly recommend it if you have the time as you pass thru the area on your way back home.

I would also suggest Carmel Valley Rd. http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/CarmelValleyRd.htm with a return on Nacimiento rd. http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/NacimientoRd.htm and Hwy 1.

Here are some of the Santa Cruz mountain roads that we frequent...
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/AlpineRd.htm
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/EmpireGrade.htm
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway236.htm
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/PescaderoRd.htm
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/TunitasCreekRd.htm
and there are a number of others that arent listed...

Any suggestions for the Seattle caravan on a route through northern California on our way down to Laguna Seca? Maybe both a fast route and a scenic/fun route?

Thanks,

Ted

See you guys in four days!

Ted,
I would HIGHLY recommend Hwy 36 between 101 and I5 http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway36.htm or
Skaggs Spring rd. between 101 and hwy 1 http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/SkaggsSpringRd.htm
