How about car insurance, telephone, PG@E, clothing, maintenence (car @ home), cable. Forget about entertainment, he's lucky to have cable tv. I spend like at least $500 a month on food, that would hypothetically leave him with $200 on all these expenses.

That doesn't seem like *that* tight of a budget...thanks to private school tuition, I only end up with maybe $400-$600 each month after fixed expenses. With that amount of spending cash, I can't go out and buy whatever the Hell I want, but it's more than enough to have a good time. As long as you spend carefully, it's not a problem. At any rate, that's just regular fixed income. Most folks get some additional income periodically, whether it be from bonuses, stock purchase plans, etc.

LoL, when I was 20
I was only making a little of 20k a year and back then I was making more than anyone I knew.
My rent in the bay is 25k a year. That's crazy!
