It also depends if you live in an apt, condo, or a single family home that does not share a wall.

I spend about $350 on a Panasonic 5.1 w/ receiver and I'm very happy with it. Has 4 satellites, one center, and one sub too. I think its only about 800watts, but its more than I need. Although, I have neighbors on the top, bottom, and left and right side of me. But so far no complaints yet.

I wouldn't even attempt a surround system plus receiver/amp for a $1000 budget. You can get an okay stereo setup for that, and I think you'd get a better movie experience with a decent stereo setup than with a cheez-ball surround setup.

Perhaps a pair of Vandersteen 1C (or used 2Ce) and a Rotel integrated amp.

Nope, back when I wanted to get a Rotel amp the local stereo store only had NAD, which a lot of people think is equivalent. I think I would have been better off with the Rotel. Now I have a Classe amp which I really like.

I used to have Vandersteens but I built my own speakers in 1994.
