$1k for speakers? Or does that include the receiver?

I'm assuming you are lookin for a basic 5.1 surround system w/ dvd player kinda thing? like the bundled packs?

Those only go for around $500... unless you are looking at buying everything separate...

I spent $500 on my sub, but I was a little pissed at the neighbors at that time...

most speakers system don't come with receivers. Is receiver critical to good sound?

You need some kind of amplification... I was just asking if you already have a receiver. I guess you do not...

But, yes, the receiver is important. Luckily, they are cheaper than they used to be.

How big is the room? The size of the room determines the ideal size of speakers and amount of power you will need.

Like others have said it depends on your room size. Does the $1000 include the receiver & sub?

Don't those go for those mass produced "name brands" (ie. Bose, Sony, Kenwood, etc) most of the time you're just paying for the name.

I'd check out AV123 or Ascend Acoustics

These are great speakers that will easily beat out name brands that cost 2-3 times more. Check out the reviews.

I personally have an Ascend Acoustics system with a Hsu sub that rocks and reproduces the sounds great.

Avoid Bose, unless you cannot detect high, low, or midrange frequencies!
