That was an amazing scenic route as well. Anyone coming back from Vegas or even going to Vegas via I-5 should look into going on 223. saves you over 150 miles from the I5-I10-I15 route. Very straight, 1 and 2 lane, with a mountainous section closer to the east end, on highway 58.
