Thumbs up Help! Buying a used s2000

Facts: 02, 48k miles, 4th owner, was a honda CPO in 06, has missing front bumper VIN (Fenders and headlights appears to be orginial with matching VIN and no scratches on screws), softop latch locks or strakers failing (would not lock in place), and small tear on softtop. @ $13k. Everything else looks clean, matching VINs everywhere else. Clean title.

Q1)I want to take it a shop to have the car checked out, but could not decide on one yet? I have Blacktrax and acura and honda connection in mind, any other suggestion for a good used car inspection? (yes I have heard about Joey, but he is a little too far and would like to find some place in south/east bay area)

Q2)I think overall is a pretty fair deal, propbably could get it at a little lower price? any thoughts on that?

thanks!

Does this 02 have the glass rear window?

I personally would avoid buying any top with damage and with the plastic window. It goes and you're stuck getting a new top.

The replacement of the front bumper wouldn't bother me. It seems I end up doing that to 'freshen' the car up after all the stone chips we get.

What's your budget?

Yes 02 is the first year with glass rear window, as for the tear it is around "1cm" not very noticable and he offer to adjust the price w. the price i got qouted to fix it.

budget, I am thinking 10-13k for a 02 or 03 with low miles?

You got pictures for us to review?

The miles sound great.

Getting in inspected is wise with so many owners and likely little back story.

The top sounds less interesting but if they'll pay to fix it...

Has the car ever been over-rev'd, an improper down shift. The retainers on AP1's are not as strong as AP2 and that would be my only other thought.

You've not mentioned condition of the interior so I'm assuming it's well cared for.

If you have it inspected by Jei at blacktracks compression might be nice to know and if he's able to throw it on the dyno. If I was there I'd kindly ask if they could, might cost a little more.

A good, low mileage 13K appears to be 'hard to find' says folks currently searching. Ask yourself if of the cars you've seen you've seen better cars for the money. If you don't think you have then it's probably a good fit for you. I personally would rather something else then a tear in the top, say a nick on the rear bumper. But that's just me.

STOP: This is the yellow one in San Jose I test drove and got inspected last weekend.

Yes the strikers are broken... I was driving it around town and the strikers fell down, so I was worried the top might blow wide open on the highway... Interior was clean otherwise.

FYI there were no tears the top when I drove it last week. Only the broken latches.

I got a compression test for that one:

BTW the owner (or the "brother in law of the owner" who is selling it) went down from $13,500 to $12,000.

If you REALLY want it, I'd get another compression test and hope the numbers are better than the ones I got done and that my numbers were a mistake (I had it tested at REN Motorsports in San Mateo).

Someone else chime in with advice... (P.S. You feelin me now Rob? )

Skip it. Too much problems for the more than average price.
