i meant to phrase it such that he shouldn't drive his car further than what he may be comfortable with if he chooses to be in a group who's pace is faster.

Yes, you should never feel pressured or feel like you have to perform while driving. If you are stressed you will make a mistake, it may be small, cost you money but eventually it'll catch up to you in a bad way.

Save pushing your limits and do it at an auto x or track where your mistakes are not nearly as costly.
