But check the carfax. Check the body panels and make sure all the VIN numbers are there. If you are picky like me, take it to a mechanic and get a compression test.
Last week I almost bought a MY02 but I took it to a mechanic and it had lousy compression numbers. This matters to some people.
I don't know how long you've been looking or how patient you are. Some people find one in a week, some people take months (like me)...

compression test should be a must. make sure you look check the motor internals under the oil cap, all fluids, etc. you could tell if its hasnt been changed or havent been kept up. drive it around at various rpms, downshift, etc. 14k isnt terrible but if you come with 13.5 i doubt he'll say no.

he asked for 16.5, and he said 14 is the lowest. if the car is stock i would do 14 no problem. but it has those ugly spray pianted rims. i just don't think i can buy a car with ugly rims. unless i can remove the paint but i don't know for sure.
he also mentioned the car has mega-flow mufflers, are those loud?
do you think this car is worth of 13.5? even with those unpleasant wheels? lol

Harry you sound like a friend of mine. He took a year to buy a car. Was so picky about all the little details. Get's the car. Two weeks later gets a ding in his door. It's not perfect anymore. He also over paid by a grand to get everything he wanted 'perfect'.
IMHO Life's to short to spend years buying a car. I've yet to find a perfect car, only great deals. It might matter to some, but I wonder if on your death bed matching vins, perfect records, great paint and ultra low miles at below market pricing is what you're going to be thinking about? Or will it more likely be; the joys you had while driving the S on winding roads.
I really enjoy my car. Make best efforts to keep it clean and damage free. That said, I drive it. It's well maintained but I rack up the miles. When it dies, I'll buy someone else's garage queen. See where I'm going with this?
If you're a collector, by an important year 00, 03, 06, 09 and pay top dollar to get it mint. But you will pay top dollar. Then you'll debate how much you drive it. If you push it. Has it become more than a car and thus less of a joy to own. Is the joy from owning or the joy from driving?
I'm getting mixed messages with your desire to have it 'perfect' yet not pay for that perfection.
Pick two
1. mint
2. low miles
3. cheap
Hopefully that helps dude. Sad to hear you've lost a year of your life when you could have been driving an S. I'll go top down for you tomorrow
