For what it's worth, a slightly less crowded area at this time of year: Castro St. in Mountain View is a good place to go. Cascal was pretty nice in my experience - many different tastes to suit the mood, and plenty to do after. Just walk over to desert or drinks after.

Cascal - Tapas Bar

Mac and Andrie are right, the place was pretty nice with good service.
(Can't comment on the Steaks though).

3 M's: Movie, Mcdonald's, Motel

On a serious note, Pampas in Palo Alto. Brazilian food. Unlimited meat on a stick!

lived in the south bay (i assume you're excluding san francisco as an option?) for 27 years and have taken many girls on dates...depending on what you're looking for price range etc...yelp and the michelin guide are really your best resources. it hasn't let me down yet. everyone's idea of good food and date worthy restaurants are different, but here are a few below that offer good food/good setting

balling
1. Baume
2. Alexander's
3. Plumed Horse
4. Village Pub
5. Chez TJ
6. Wakuriya
7. Le Papillon
8. Parcel 104
9. 231 Ellsworth

great view
1. Bella Vista (you drive up hwy 9 to get there vs. other suggestions here where you'd take your date up a windy mtn road after dinner, which could cause puke)

mid range $
1. San Pedro Wine Bar
2. Pizza Antica
3. Twist Bistro
4. Ocean Blue Sushi
5. Yuki Sushi
6. Krung Thai
7. Evvia Estiatorio
8. En or Gochi or Tanto
9. Osteria Coppa
9. Attic

love pampas but i would never take a date there....unless she can eat as much as me, it's a waste of money, and on top of that, if you're planning on feeling good for any sort of after dinner activity, you're not going to be eating a lot of meat. oh, and manresa gave me the shits as far as santana row goes, besides pizza antica, i think the food sucks and people go there only for image. this could work to your favor if the girl (or you) are into that stuff, but you won't get good food and i think you'll just meet a bunch of douchebags and gold diggers.
