Tea garden +1. also the BART is a great way to get around, just go walking around by fishermans wharf, and the bart stop with the borders and the big H&M has great shopping.

Alcatraz tour. Pretty cool if you've never done it. Gives you a bit of history behind the prison.

Oh, and remember to buy tickets in advance for the Alcatraz tour. They sell out sometimes, lol, ask me how I know. It would suck to roll all the way out here and not be able to do it.

+1 for Ike's. Also, if you're wanting some good mexican food, hit up the mission. Also a lot of neat bars in the area. The Dalva bar right off 16th st just a couple blocks from the BART station is pretty famous (was in a Third Eye Blind song). The mission is great for Mexican/Tapas, and dive bars if that's what you're in to.
If you stay out late there, just don't give people reasons to mess with you and they won't. Most area's are a bit sketchy.. but it's a big city, what do you expect?

Tommy's restaurant on Geary between 22nd and 23rd is a fantastic mexican food spot. They are also known for their tequila selection (that's kind of an understatement). It's quite a bit off the beaten tourist path but you won't be disappointed.
