In Sonoma, St Francis, home of the valley's best Merlots. Kunde has a great cave tour, Kenwood is always a friendly place, try their Pinot Noir. For something different try Chateau Potelle Winery. It is in the hills between Sonoma and Napa. From Sonoma you take Trinity Road to get there from 12. Trinity Road is a great S2K road with lots of winding turns and a great reason to go there; you will like the wine too. Chateau Potelle is a great place to stop for a picnic, just buy a bottle of wine from them for the table. Get directions from their WEB site since it is easy to pass by:

This is a great time of the year to go wine tasting. Don't waste your time doing anything else.

Sonoma: Town square, lots of restaurants, cafe's and wine bars. Sonoma is home to the last mission in northern California, (north of San Francisco) it is on the square. Sebastiani Winery on 4th st. E. Cucina Viansa on Arnold Dr. near Sears Point Raceway, Ledson Winery at 7335 Sonoma Hwy, (Hwy 12) General Vallejo's home is on Spain St. If you have time, check out Jack London State park in Glen Ellen off of Arnold Dr. Jack Londons home is up there. If you like twistys, Check out Calistoga Rd. It is about 15 miles north of Sonoma off Hwy 12 (make a right at the stoplight next to the Safeway shopping center. Calistoga road is smoooooth
You can stop and check out the petrified forest on Calistoga road and then continue on into Calistoga where you can relax in a hot mineral spring.
I'm not into the wine tour thing, but there are about 150 wineries in Sonoma County alone, plus more than 100 wineries in Napa County. There are about 10 or so winerys located within the City of Sonoma. There are wineries located in between Sears Point (the gateway to wine country) and Sonoma on Arnold Drive.
