Most of the time you won't even feel when the shock wears out until it's obvious. It probably start wearing out about after 20K miles.

that's no good, you could end up spending a few grand on suspension and have it wear out in a year or so if you drive a lot

well suspension(shock) is consumable items so eventually it will wear out no matter what. Just like brake pads, tires, etc.

Most of the suspension companies offer overhauling the shocks which will bring back the condition.
