Quickie Question from a new owner:

Does Calif. law state that a front license plate needs to be attached? I'd like to simply leave it off and plug the holes.

Thanks.

Yep you need front plates here in california. I would know because not even two months of having my s2k I get pulled over and ticketed for not having my front plates. It's 100 bux for the ticket, but if you get a cop to sign if off its only 10 bux. I have mine on because it's my daily commuter but if you'll willing to take the risk drive without the front plates it makes the car look so much better anyways.

I have no front plate on my S2000, come to think of it, I have never had a front plate on any of my cars, and I have not been ticketed for it... speeding, yes - no front plate, no.

I took mine off about two years ago and haven't been hassled for it, but I never drive in San Francisco. My plate is in the trunk and if the subject ever comes up I'll claim that I took it off when I waxed the car (true, but the first time, not the most recent), that I just couldn't bring myself to put it back on (true) and can have it back on in just a few minutes. I'll then ask whether it's more important that I have a front plate on or that I receive a ticket for not having one, to see if I can get out of it on the spot. I figure any reasonable officer will let me reinstall it right then rather than writing me a ticket.

Hopefully I won't have to find out if this reasoning works or not.

Or.... you can do what I've done... don't put a rear plate on either. 6 months and counting with my VIN sticker on my windshield from the dealer.

got that beat... my boyrfriend has a 2000 Corvette, no plates on front or back and the sticker is still in the windshield. I nag him constantly about it, but just like children, the more you say one thing, the more they do the opposite.

"I don't know officer... the plates got lost in the mail?" With all this stuff about stolen identities, lost/stolen mail. Why not plates as well as personal info?

I'm sure there are half a dozen good responses or explanations. I have a friend that had Nevada plates that kept getting stolen off his car.

I had another friend that amazingly enough had a 300ZXTT with the plat "BFG9000" and he was ALWAYS getting his front plate stolen(amazing that he got the plate, not that it was stolen). Of course he probably had paperwork to prove he was in process of replacing it, but...

For $100, I am taking the risk and keeping my car clean.
