The V6 in my camry is known to sludge up and I have 220,000 miles and it's still fine with 10,000 plus mile oil changes.
Toyota extended my warranty but there was no need. I noticed it gunking up at about 30,000 miles and switched to redline a few oil changes and then switched to Amsoil at about 50-60,000 miles.
That motor looks like it has penzoil sludge. Wax based oil ftl

I would put money on the engine pictured (esp last picture) was either over heated, cheap oil(or really bad oil) or a LOT of short trip driving.
The only time I have seen an oil filter collect sludge was after a sludge problem was out of control, and then customer tried an "oil cleaning" product in the oil.
Seeing how many car are out there with 10k service intervals and how few have sludge problems, I would tend believe its a customer issue more than MFG (how many of YOU have read the owners manual and followed what is said).

The owner who took these pictures bought the car used at 36K and pictures @ 40K. His motor takes 8qt of oil as well. Maybe the proper service wasn't done on the car. I got this all on the first page.. I'd be interested to know if this was dino oil or syn oil. The owner also clearly stated the dealer was putting in the wrong oil.
Oil change intervals are greater in Europe for BMW and Merc than state side. I'm wondering why? We all know BMW makes some great motors.
As for driving 10-15K on motor oil. I've done so on an 00 TL that we sold with 140K on it without issue. We ran regular motor oil until 80K and than switched to Mobile 1 Extended Performance. Didn't burn oil. When I did the valves at 110K there was no build up and it got great gas mileage.

why would anyone want to run oil for that long? even for daily driving (spirited that is) I would NEVER want it in there longer than 5k ... after 4k its constantly on my mind.
My S2000 drivers book say 7500 on regular oil unless in extreme driving conditions.

I think most good or synthetic oils will last/perform over 10k miles, but most filters in the marketing could last same? I'v read royal purple's user manual, they are saying their oil will last 12k miles, but they still recommend to have the filter changed every 3k miles. But I guess it's depends on how you driving and what kind cars, we have customers oil change every 5000 miles, many of them have really clean oils coming out, but some of them had really dirty oil, with exactly same oil and filter.
I tried 5000 on my evo and oil wasn't as clean as I expect, so I had next one at 3000, much better.

The clarity of the oil really has little to do with its ability to work.
the only real way to find out how well your oil is performing is to have it tested.
I used to change the oil in my race car after each race weekend. I sent samples to Blackstone labs and they told me i was changing oil to early. with their help I found my oil will last more than a year of racing.
