Default DMV moving pass

Hello everyone,

I am about to go get a car that was last registered out of state. Cars tags are expired already. I heard about day passes and was wondering how much they cost and the whole process of getting it. I will have the title, But the day I get it back up to the bay the car will have everything ripped out and swapped into a diff shell. So I will be giving the new shell to someone else. I am most likely gonna give the title to the other person once I get to the bay, And would prefer just to put it under his name so that its less paperwork for both him and I.

Here is all the stuff that I am thinking about and wanted to make sure it is possible:

1. Since the title is in my hand when I try to get the moving pass will they make me put the car in my name?

2. Will they have to inspect the vehicle?

3. How long are passes good for?

4. Do you have to apply for the pass? Or is it something I can go into the DMV for and get the pass the same day?

5. Also figured since the new owner will register it as "Off Highway Vehicle" if I get pulled over in the car without a moving permit they will just tell me to get the car reffed. Once they ref the car all they will say is that it needs to be registered as "Non Op" or "Off Highway Vehicle".

Any help would be helpful because I will be taking the trip this friday.

Thanks
Thanks

Those questions are extensive. I think you need to call DMV and ask.

ive been around loops about "monthly" passes so i know quite a bit (for the past 6 months, ive been in DMV by el camino at least 24 times). let me try to help you out.

1. Since the title is in my hand when I try to get the moving pass will they make me put the car in my name?
-first you must try to register the car here in california before you can even get a monthly pass, there is no such thing as day pass. and yes you have to register the car under your name. to do so you might need an original bill of sale from the previous owner.

2. Will they have to inspect the vehicle?
-Correct me if im wrong my s2ki people. i dont think so they have to inspect the car. but they do require a smog.

3. How long are passes good for?
-passes are given in month-long increments.

4. Do you have to apply for the pass? Or is it something I can go into the DMV for and get the pass the same day?

- you have to transfer the title of the car. if you cant get all the requirements (ex. bill of sale, fees, etc.) then, you can ask for a pass. if its reasonable enough i doubt that they will not give you one.

5. Also figured since the new owner will register it as "Off Highway Vehicle" if I get pulled over in the car without a moving permit they will just tell me to get the car reffed. Once they ref the car all they will say is that it needs to be registered as "Non Op" or "Off Highway Vehicle".

-if the car is registered non-op and you get caught, youre basically ####ed. but what i did (WHICH I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU NOT TO DO IT) when i got pulled over i told the office that i just got my smog done and im on my way to DMV to get my new title and plates. LOL.

hope i answered your queries correct.
please, if you think im wrong feel free to correct me

For the inspection, if they do require one, it's generally not extensive. You'd pull up to the side window for "inspections" and someone will come out and usually just do a quick visual. My bro in law got a car from Texas and he had to do an inspection and it ended up a quick visual one.

You got a lot going on with your transaction. Why not ask seller to get an extension from their state (depending on how long the tags were exprired)?

Easiest thing would be to get a trailer and tow it to cali.

I would agree to call DMV and ask about your situation. Only thing is to be vague about the vehicle you are buying. Basically ask about getting a car from out of state with expired tags and the process to go through with it.
