the bigger the spread the worse the oil. No real race car is running 10/30 or any multi viscocity weight oil. Plain old petrolium is totaly fine for everyday use. A 100 degree track day is a different story.
10/30 will be more stable than 10/40
You might gain a couple horse power by using a 0/20 oil at the expense of increased wear on bearings and other high friction surfaces.
At Thunder Hill during the 25hr enduro race cars tend to run 10W40. Spoon does for sure and Motul advises endurance cars running their product to do so also. However to each his own. I can only comment on what I have experience first hand.

you're right
The film strength from the 10/40 is more important.
As far as petroleum oil (which I doubt anyone uses) it takes a higher quality oil to equal a 10/30 after the friction modifiers and other additives. 10/40 in synthetic is completely different and the added additives is minimal so you still end up with a high quality oil.

Check out this post https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...0&#entry2888529 Based on that post, i found that valvoline synpower is slightly better than mobil1 synthetic. Kragen has the synpower on sale right now for only 3.49 a quart too!
good deal from Kragen until Aug-23rd.

just got 6 quarts of Valvoline full synthetic from Kragen for $3.99 each with coupon, final price after $3 rebate per quart is $1 per quart.

Have been using Mobile I forever, hopfully Valvoline is comparable to Mobile I.

I use ENEOS. It has been dyno proven to improve horsepower and reduce rotating friction from the motor.
From my experience with my NC MX-5, Redline improves horsepower more than Eneos, by my butt dyno.

Installed exhaust(with redline already): Felt HP increase over 3500 rpm
Oil Change to Eneos: Car felt like it was stock
Oil Change back to Redline: Hp Improvement over 3500, and smoother High RPM revs.

My dad has had similar results with his RS4 when he switched to Redline from Lubromoly.

Be careful when oil companies claim to improve horsepower, it's an improvement over conventional mineral oil for sure, but it might not be as good as other fully synthetics. I thought Eneos would be bomb from all the hype it got, but my car felt heavy and sluggish after changing to it from Redline.

Sorry, but the butt dyno carries no weight.

I would like to see dyno results comparing the "JDMOMGITSGOTTABGOOD" Eneos to Redline, or other fully synthetic oils then.

Until then, I feel that it's safe to say that Redline makes the engine feel more alive and smoother in higher RPM's in both my MX-5(Compared to Eneos) and my dad's RS4(Compared to Lubromoly).

Don't take me the wrong way, this is just from my personal experience.
And I don't have anything against JDM, just people shouldn't hype stuff up so much since it's from across the Pacific.

i would like to see results of your butt dyno vs a real dyno...wait i forgot the butt dyno has no substantial results that can be provided expect "it feels faster."

both are good oils, just keep it at that

What diff fluid do you use?
LE607. They may have changed the model name.

Preface, I use Redline fluids almost exclusively.

Even if Redline made a difference of 5 hp, your butt dyno couldn't tell the difference. I think it's safe to say your butt dyno needs some tuning .
