I think Ichishima (Spoon) commented that oil is not like a bottle of wisky. No need to buy super $ oil for street/track use. Just change it often with quality fluids.

I am sure its a diff. story for endurance / pro racing series.

I try to replace my oil after 2 track days. Used (Super Walmart) Mobile 1 on my prevous S and currently using Castol Syntec (also Super Walmart) on my current S. I also change the tranny fluid after 2 track day with Amsoil synthetic fluid also.

I never had any problems with using affordable quality oil with on a frequent replacement interval.

I would like to see what happens to a motor using Walmart generic oil after 25 hours of racing. You think the results would be the same as using Redline, Amsoil, Eneos, etc... Maybe if you drive a Geo Metro and change the oil everyone 3k miles, it doesn't matter, but for some of us, it definitely matters.
i would agree, for 80% of the owners, oem, generic, factory recommended is adequate.

the other 20% "power users" the premium stuff maybe is worth it.

upon further research, apparently the process and raw materials to make different grade synthetic oils differ dramatically, thus justifying the price difference. also explains why within one brand there are so many types/tiers of oil.

so, comparing walmart oil to premium oil is not valid because you are basically comparing 2 very different things. however, to the op, it makes the choice easy, as far as i have researched, there is no generic brand that is 100% synthetic oil out there.

Yeah I agree with the changing it out often ideal rather then spending loads of $ on oils.

What diff fluid do you use?

oops didnt actually address the ops question.

i dont think a dyno has the sensitivity to dial in and pick up the difference in hp due to the oil. seems like an awfully crude way to test the oil. plus, when evaluating oil, seems like other factors are more important than adding power.

Rob! It is more important to change fluids and upkeep with maintenance rather than constantly putting oils through the Pepsi challenge.

Also, you probably don't want to use 10W30 in a 25 hr enduro no matter what brand because that level grade looses viscosity. That's why many run 10W40.
the bigger the spread the worse the oil. No real race car is running 10/30 or any multi viscocity weight oil. Plain old petrolium is totaly fine for everyday use. A 100 degree track day is a different story.
10/30 will be more stable than 10/40
You might gain a couple horse power by using a 0/20 oil at the expense of increased wear on bearings and other high friction surfaces.
