I've been eyeing that particular processor (the 8800 "Wolfdale") myself

quad core is overkill, and i don't even think a lot of apps use it to its advantage?

and yeah, i notice that the cache is bigger on the wolfdale, but i would assume that newer cpu + bigger cache = more expensive, whereas it's the exact opposite

Exactly...no point in getting a quad...at least, not yet. Completely overkill for current apps.

Also, I was a little puzzled about the price point difference myself...but if I were you, I'd jump on the Wolfdale ASAP before Intel or NewEgg realizes their price discrepancy.

Quad cores as they currently stand are best used for multi-tasking, not single application performance. If you find yourself doing a lot of multi-tasking, then I feel that quad cores are worth it, but if you are just editing a single picture in Photoshop, then no gains are to be had.

Finally got all my parts in! Here's my final list of parts for what will probably be a pretty top notch setup.

Motherboard: Gigabyte P35 DS3L: $90 from Newegg
CPU: Intel C2D E8400 Wolfdale 3.0ghz: $215 (after tax) from Frys
Video Card: EVGA NVidia 8800GT: $240 from Newegg (after rebate)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2GB: $40 from Newegg (after rebate)
Hard Drive: 320GB Seagate SATA: $87 (after tax) from Frys
Tax & Shipping from Newegg: $35

Total: $707. $7 over budget

Using stock cooling, existing peripherals, and optical/floppy drives & existing 500w PSU.

Big thanks to everyone for your advice.

Frank & Brian: I will get to finishing up the editing for your shoots asap.
