I've encountered a homeless man just a few days ago in front McDonald's on Berryessa road when I was buying a kids meal for my son. White males approaches me Pan handles for change but then I countered offer him on buying him a meal.White males stands puzzled on my offer and states "I'll have to pass up on your offer on the meal". I respond back "Are you sure? it will feed you sir! ". Males walks away not saying a word.

My point is some homeless people won't really care on what you give them. All they need is to gather up change to fund for beer. I've encountered many homeless in my line of work pan handling but I'm always down to help out! when do you need this package by?

That's why "money" isn't on the list.
At least a few days before Christmas Eve if you plan on dropping it off at my house.

My dad's business used to receive (before the recession) those huge holiday gift food basket things (with sausages, crackers, jams, and other random things). We tried to give one to a homeless guy in San Francsico on Christmas Eve and he said "what the f@#k and I going to do with this". We left it with him anyways.

People, please don't forget that mental illness and addiction are sometimes the reasons why these folks become homeless. They may not be in the best state of mind at the exact moment you hand them a gift, but that doesn't mean they wont benefit from it or appreciate it in the long run.

For those who don't know, we are located in Walnut Creek, near downtown. We also try to make it to the Friday meet, and can let ya'll know when we end up at the Friday meet for those who want to make the trade off there.

Nice link - we used to work the soup kitchens in West Lafayette during the holidays as we would see the SAME homeless people on the streets near campus. Definitely not all homeless are addicts and it's amazing to hear their stories on how they got "there"....it's not always what you would think or expect.

These care packs are a great way to help the locals - we have a few guys who come around our neighborhood collecting all the recycles on their 3-wheel bikes but not sure if they are homeless or just short on cash.
