Having almost any radar detector is better than running without. The problem with the low end units is that they false more than the high end units and they are less sensitive. Of course the V1 allows detection of multiple radar sources which is great for heavy radar enforcement areas...not many around here. For the most part, the CHP and local police don't use radar nearly as effectively (or as often) as they do in many other states. However, regardless of what detector you use, instant-on detection is hard to catch before you are tagged.

I have been running an Escort wireless ever since getting this car 3+ years ago. I have detected radar traps hundreds of times, making the investment well worth it. Despite this, I still got one radar ticket due to instant-on.
