Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. I ended up going with Verizon CDMA and getting a Samsung a530. It's small, color screen, and Verizon has a decent family plan after all.
I also met with Tim (Rekka777) to check out some AT&T phones, and he was a great help, with good prices on the phones to boot. I'd definitely recommend talking to him if you're in the market for an AT&T phone. Thanks, Tim!
