It is not about the speed but the temperature and condition of the surface up which you are driving. There are some turns on 35 and 9 that stay wet throughout the rain season. Too much brake or throttle or correction and anything could happen. The S-03's channel H20 better. When S-02's get to about 70% worn, their handling characteristics deteriorate along with their wet-traction. In short, any tire has a limited number of heat cycles. The more performance oriented the tire the less the total number of heat cycles (oversimplified). You can have visible tread blocks on a tire that is not going to handle very well because it has been heat cylced to death. Rubber gets hard and starts to crumble when it is ready to be replaced.

well the part of 35 that i go to, from 92 to the top of the mountain... that place dries up on normal days, but there are small sections of water that seems to be like streams that intersect the road throughout 35. do u think these small "streams" will cause the tires to heat cycle? i'm not sure if i understand completly what you mean but by heat cycle do you mean by the change of temperature in the tire through a single run or by season or what exactly? bit confused..

If you really want increase the handling limit of your car (dry traction only) get a nice set of R-compund tires. Toyo RA-1, Michelin PSC, Kumho V700.

rookies. when in rain:
1. SLOW DOWN
2. SLOW DOWN
3. SLOW DOWN
4. choose a higher gear than you would normally use
5. keep throttle inputs smooth
6. minimize braking
7. increase braking distance
8. increase following distance

I regularly drive in the rain over hwy 17 on bald tires without any trouble as long as I follow those pointers.
