I think there are two possible methods for preserving the audio controls on the left side of the console when replacing the audio head unit.
One is "Pinky's Mod", the other is something I haven't researched yet. I'd try searching for audio controls and such on the forum and see what it turns up.
I haven't replaced the head unit in my S yet, nor the speakers. Figure I'll grab them a bit later, maybe some other solutions will show up by then also.
It seems Alpine's got *some* units that work with a thingamajig they make to preserve the stock console controls. Alpine should have a nice new MP3 unit out shortly, don't know if it will work with this new interface though.
BTW, does anybody else have any problems with drooling on themselves when driving the S?
Lastly, if you've a new S, I recommend you check your oil frequently like the manual suggests. I haven't even hit 2K miles yet and I was down at the low marker. Glad I checked and filled her up, saw a smoking car on side of the road while out driving today.
I gather I also ran into the early-bird Stook group when I was heading home for some lunch off 9/84. Looked like there were 3 of you.

If you are going to have a car stereo installed into your S2000 and you want your car "handled with care", then do not pass up ROLLING THUNDER in San Rafael. They may be more expensive than the average Joe-Install, but they will perform an excellent install and take care of your car at the same time.

We just had our JL speakers/tweeters and amp installed. We decided to keep the stock head unit.
The installer was Eric Reese 408.947.7573. He works for the Good Guys and was recommended to us through another installer.
It was his first S2000, so it took two guys all day to do the install, but they did a very good job.

I'm heading into Marin Auto Sound Alarm today. Dropping my car off for 3 days of work, that'll cost me around $4500. It's expensive to me, but I've had too many shoddy stereo installs to be ripped again. I took my car to Custom Car Stereo's and they wanted to build a plywood box for $600, I told them no thanks. So I headed over to MASA to get a professional install. (I hope) No one has reported having work done there yet. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

300 for JL XR 6.5 coaxs.
They come with a crossover network and sound great!
200 for a 37.5x2 Zapco Amp.
Doesn't sound like a lot of power, but really it is plenty.
About 150 for the high level to balanced output and install of the amp and speaks.
The guy who did the install owns a DelSol and was pretty familiar with the stook, so he took great care to make sure everything was just right (no visible changes to the car).
He brought me in from the waiting room both before and during the install to make sure that I was comfortble with the way things were going to be.
My suggestion is to look for a reputable place with a Honda owner-- you can't go wrong.
