Why out of state?
You can get it here at MSRP. You can get it maybe $1500 under MSRP in Midwest, East Coast. But then you have to go thru all the hassle of delivery and registration. Doesn't worth it I think.

I got mine in Oregon way back when you couldnt find one locally for less that 40k. Times have since changed> I'd probably get one locally now that they are reasonably priced. Buying one out of state doesnt save you anything as when you bring the car into the state, CA DMV charges you Use tax which is the same as sales tax. Unless you "live" out of state, ie here for college or something, you'd be legally required to register your car when you brounght the car into the state. I have a business in Oregon for the past few years, so my car was technically an Oregon car driven primarily in Oregon. Unfortunatly all the business seems to be down here...so i finally registered my car in CA this week and paid 8% sales & Use tax to register it. OUCH!
Just get it here unless you want to deal with the hassle.

I'm not sure anybody actually answered your question.
My car came from Oregon, but I purchased it through an auto broker. It had never been registered anywhere else and I had the original manufacturer's paperwork. I took it to the DMV, they looked at the car to make sure it met California emission standards and to match up the VIN. I had to have the emission checked on it at a local smog check station and give the DMV the paper work. I also had to pay the taxes and all that on it. They gave me plates for it and I was done.
Fairly painless, but only worth it if you can't get one locally at a reasonable price.
