Blowing a tire + dogged by a Corolla = sucks

Blowing a tire + dogged by a Corolla = sucks
So I've been keeping an eye on my right rear tire since it's been slowly leaking air (couple PSI a week) but not a big deal - I've been PMing a Socal member on getting a lightly used RE-050 to replace it.
So on Saturday I'm crusing up 9 pretty slowly (45-50mpg) to go hiking at Castle Rock with my gf when suddently - BANG - and I feel the car begin the shudder.
I mutter a curse and pull over to find a nice gash in the right rear and it already completely deflated. Luckily it happened on a good size straight so there was a good 100 yard visibility in each direction.
1. Drivers who zoom by at 60-70mph suck - slow down around a car with it's hazards on and clearly in distress and then speed back up. At the very least, there could be debris on HW9 that you want to slow down for.
2. It sucked hard having to put the donut on the front tire, and then put the front tire on the rear.
At least we got to go on a nice hike before heading back (only about 1/2 mile away from Castle Rock at this point) and it was pretty empty due to the cool weather.
Heading back was a nightmare - I didn't want to go over 40mph coming back due to donut and not wanting to put much stress on it. Should have been fine but a Corolla of all things (XRS badge or something) dogs me on the way down. My girlfriend cracking up the whole time from the look on my face didn't help either.
Getting a new set of rears installed on Tuesday = priceless
