IV uses a much larger needle. I feel your pain about finding veins. When I went in for knee surgery last year, it took them 5 times before they got the IV started. It was pretty painful since they couldn't give me any pain killers. I was actually turning pale.
Giving blood is nothing like that.

i believe for blood draw for donation they use a 16G needle which has a bigger bore than your typical 18G IV needle. (the larger the number the smaller the bore of the needle). typically an IV will be smaller because they will just use it to infuse fluid into your body.
don't quote me on this one but i'm pretty sure the last time they drew my blood the needle was green (16G needle) and the reason for that is so they don't hemolyze (break) the red blood cells when they get it in the bag.
anyway, don't let this discourage you from giving blood! kudos to you brave volunteers! i'd jump on the band wagon but i need my blood for my physical readiness test next month T.T

Just found out the sister is coming to town. I'm going to have to miss this event. Sorry!
When's the next event? I usually donate blood once a year.
