Default Is this bike worth looking at?

So I want to get in to road riding and don't have a lot of $$ to spend on a decent road bike. I saw this one, and know cannondale is a good company.

Any bike guru's that can give me some insight?

I was also looking at the Schwinn Varsity/Prelude's (the newer ones) to get an idea of how "beginner" I'm talking about

TIA!

Well there are other things along those lines, and it doesn't hurt to low ball...

If you get something with horizontal dropouts, you can turn it into a fixed gear bike later on if you upgrade to a newer bike.

But remember, you still need: helmet, gloves, pump, possibly clipless shoes+pedals...

No intentions on ever making/getting a fixie. They're tough to ride! Maybe a single speed one day..

check, don't have, check, don't have . But I do understand what I will need.

Also, with the canondale I can lowball to like $240 which is exactly what I want to pay. I'm more concerned that this "canondale" isn't what they say it is.. and that the components are out of date and stuff.

I'm going to look at it at like 5.. what should I be looking for what I look at it?

What exactly is the appeal anyways of a fixie?

I know it's a fad with the "scene" people. But beats the hell out of me!

http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html

Adds variety to your workout. Lower maintenance commuter. Lighter, cheaper, more challenging...

Take a scale if you have one.

Make sure the wheels are "true". Spin them and watch from above.

Ride it up a steep hill and see how the shifting is. Just don't shift under heavy load.

Try shifting up and down through all the gears while holding the back wheel off the ground. Make sure it does not skip any gears in either direction.
