Whats the point of not having brakes? Stopping is far more important than going.

Not to stereotype but I think this is strictly a west coast thing with hippies and other idiots who don't have anything better to do in life. I have plenty of friends who see this day to day since they work in SF and they note most are not your typical "family man" type, in other words no responsibility or just plain loser....
When I ask my cycling buddies in the Chicago area, no one has ever heard of this - this could be because either most of my friends are too old to understand or there are no hills in the midwest cities.....haha

The brakeless riding thing came from New York... and Boston actually has a fairly sizable brakeless fixie scene -- just not as big as SF.

I am actually a fixed gear rider as I am away for the weekdays in Berkeley for school and in the summers in San Jose. I do find it pretty efficient to ride around fixed, BUT I have always had brakes on mines and rarely do I ever run stop signs or red lights. Out of all my friends that ride fixed, I am the only one with brakes (must be s2ki logic ). But on the real deal, I think it's ridiculous that they still don't have brakes even after some have gotten into car related incidents. Brakes have allowed me to save my tires, the safety of others, and my life
On a side note, it is by law in Davis, CA to have brakes on your bike. A friend of mines has actually gotten a fix-it ticket for not having brakes.

New evidence has surfaced. Let's just say he is screwed.
