i'm not very familiar w/battery tenders, but it's my understanding that gel cell, lithium, and other non-traditional types of batteries require special tenders. that said, i think most of the recent tenders on the market are capable of charging several types of batteries.

as for the Shorai, KC Machine offers a rebate when you purchase their Shorai battery kit and tender at the same time, so I plan to get those when my current battery goes.

If you look at KC's post he explains what's needed or in the case of the shorai what's not needed.

I'm pretty sure it was there, if not then he posted it on his site.

You definitely want to use the Shorai tender for the shorai battery, it is reconditioning the cells not just keeping it charged.

Mine has been totally fine without a tender so far, even when leaving the car for well over a week or so without a conditioner. It's nice though with the Shorai and KC machine tray it would be very easy for me with my car in a open parking garage to pull out the battery and put it on the conditioner in my apartment.

I also have the Kinetic Custom Machine battery and it is awesome. I very rarely drive my car during the week, typically I just drive it every couple weeks and it always starts just fine. I think 17 days is the longest I've gone without starting it and it started up first try. Colin gave me a deal on my shorai charger/tender when I bought the battery and tray. Colin from KCM was at the Blacktrax T&T at Thunderhill the weekend before last with his Prelude. After meeting him and chasing him around the track I can say he's a great guy and great to do business with.
