Anyone Know Anything about Electric Scooters? (Stand-up, Razor Type)
Hey all,
As the title states, wondering if anyone out there is experienced w/these? I got the grand idea to pick one up to use to commute to work. Well, I'm still planning on driving, but instead of continuing to pay for lot parking ($1920+ per year), I'm going to park on the street and use the scooter over the last .5-1 mile to the office.
I already picked up a cheap, fixer-upper Razor off Craigslist, which, allegedly, only needed a new motor. I got the replacement motor, a new chain, and other miscellaneous parts off Ebay, but the scooter still won't work. Looks like it might need new batteries, a controller, and/or throttle. I'm going to cut my losses w/this one and just junk it or keep it for parts. Apparently, these things break quite often.
Anyhow, it's hurting my head just surfing the net trying to get info on these things. Basically, I want to know....
1. What EASY, upgrade options are there for the batteries? (higher capacity/life and lighter would be great)
2. What EASY, upgrade options are there for the motor?
3. Any other electric scooters worth considering? (don't want to spend too much. $300-400 is probably the max)
Thanks in advance!

just picked up another scooter. same model but better condition and fully functional. going to use it as is until the motor goes and then swap in the new one i originally bought for my project scooter or possibly upgrade the batteries and control unit to go w/an even bigger motor.

first ride this morning... batteries died a block away after parking my car. had to kick/push the dang thing all the way to the office... in the rain! lol. thing weighs like 50 lbs, so I was sweating up a storm!
man, thing worked like a champ when i testrode it last night. guess i'll be upgrading the batteries sooner than i thought.

Forget batteries IMO ~ check out these guys

I actually use one for real commute purposes off BART just like how you plan to use it. I can cover 1-2 miles in around 5 minutes or less. Folds up fast with on added weight of batteries to lug around.
This is a real man's scooter, not a kid's toy and it moves really well and fast. Parts are replaceable too. They used to offer an electric version but discontinued it for probably the same reason it doesn't sell well.

thanks for the replies and suggestions, but i'm not a fan of scooter w/solid wheels. i much prefer riding on air. i would've just used a skateboard if I wanted to go solid. there are tons of cracks, potholes, etc on the streets by my office. i don't want to hit one of those and eat it.
even though i'm having battery issues, as just about all e-scooter owners do, i'm fine w/the Razor. i only need to go about .5 a mile each way, and the streets are flat. yes, i recognize i could still use a kick/push scooter, but last thing i want to do is exert MORE energy in the early morning. i don't want to mess up my shoes either.
i went on a battery run last night. couldn't find anything good. ended up getting a couple from Home Depot, but they turned out to be lemons. probably been on the shelves forever. they were displayed literally in the very rear corner of the store. i ordered another couple online. hopefully they'll work.

as previously mentioned, Home Depot replacement batteries were lemons. wouldn't hold charge, so got 2 new batteries off Ebay. they have 25% higher capacity at less than half the price! should reduce my charging frequency. haven't ridden the scooter to work again yet, but the batteries work well so far. *NO JINX*
i really wanted to upgrade the throttle & battery controllers to get more juice/power, but didn't have time to do the research and order the parts. i did manage to order some bike lights though. the headlight i got is crazy BRIGHT! perfect for early sunsets after work now and even day riding w/all the knuckleheads driving on the streets. i have more plans for this thing too!

finally got my scooter up and running. made it the whole way from my car to the office! this thing is def going to need some modding in the future. it struggles on even the slightest incline and on rough pavement too. i was loaded down w/my lunch, extra pair of shoes, and some other stuff in my backpack, so was carrying more weight than usual though.
i only have to go like 4-5 blocks (long ones), but drivers out here simply don't give a #@c%! they were zooming by and drifting towards me w/out care. kamikaze bicyclists get on my nerves when i drive, but i was making a conscious effort to stay off to the side too! good thing i got some lights. i guess i better wear my helmet too.
this thing is pretty fun, even at slightly higher than pedestrian speeds. i think the custom mudguards i installed added some drag, but when i was testriding w/my new batteries the other day, the back of my legs and torso were completely covered in mud. function >>> form gonna do a few more things to it when i have time. i'll post a couple pics later.
