for those who have never done it, i recommend scheduling a class (they only offer it certain time slots) to get to know the basics of belaying etc... you can't show up and expect to climb right away since you need to be certified.
check out planetgranite.com . i go to the sunnyvale location but have been to the SF and Belmont locations as well if you can't make it all the way to the south bay.

But yeah, I'm going to get belay certified before I invite anyone to come along

I'm not belay certified, but I still climb. You just can't belay someone else. I went with my friend and his dad (who are both belay certified) so they were able to belay me and eachother--and we just took turns.

take the class to learn how to do so and you'll be granted a temp day pass.
come back any time after that (assuming at least 24 hours from day of class) to take a test. for the most part, they're pretty lax with the test as long as you show a basic understanding for the safety points and communication.

I climb regularly at Berkeley Ironworks. I usually go about 2-4 times a week depending on how much pain I'm in. Occasionally I will also go to Touchstone Climbing in Oakland. I'm at 5.10d / 5.11a for top roping and v3's for bouldering. You dont really need to take the class, just have someone who is belay certified to teach you. If you are testing for the permanent card, it'll take you a few good tries. From my experience, they dont like handing out permanent cards too easily. If anyone is up for some climbing, let me know! I still haven't met any of you locals yet so this would be a good opportunity.

I go to planite granite in sunnyvale. I just need to take the test and get belayed certified. I've taken the mini-class but never got the time to take the test. Last time I went (which was the first time in many years) , I was able to do 5.7.
