In my experience, when I was hit, I pursued the claim through the at-fault party's insurance company. My insurance company did not get involved. I was able to get multiple quotes and eventually settled with a shop I trusted, and all the claims went through that shop and through the at-fault party's insurance company.

Collision Doctor in Hayward is really good. I dozed off and hit a guard rail in my DD and damaged the fender and quarter panel. Although it was a $2,500 job(thank god for my $500 deductible), the car came back BETTER than before the accident. They did extra work(fixed several cracks/scratches on front bumper). Highly recommended

I just had a new Amuse R1 bumper painted and installed at B-Line Body Shop in San Jose. They also repaired one of the Downforce fenders that was cracking. Really good communication and attention to detail. My DD needs to have the rear bumper replaced and I'll be going back to B-Line.

I was rear ended while at a complete stop in freeway traffic in my S2000 a week or so before Christmas. I haven't gotten it fixed yet but on Touge's recommendation I'm going to Parker Robb. There is slight damage on the rear bumper, appraisal is for a full replacement but Parker Robb thinks they can heat up and fix the bumper without needing a replacement (and it look's like replacement bumpers now are just refurbished parts anyways...) I'm also hoping to take this time for them to paint and install a front lip but I haven't got a quote from them yet.
I would reiterate the point about having good records. I wasn't able to deal with their insurance quickly because I was out of town for the holidays. When I got back they called and said they were denying responsibility because their client told them that I had backed into him! Asshole. Fortunately I had recorded video of him saying that he rear ended me and his insurance quickly changed their tune when I sent them that video. Asshole.
