arrrmand & jasonw, thanks!

this clears things up for me.

Alpine 9857 w/ harness from Crutchfield
Alpine KCE-422i cable for iPod
Modifry Alpine Wired DCI

just gotta figure out where i want the 422i to end up. in the 4Runner I have it in the glove box with the slack of the cable wrapped up with a simple twist tie.

Unfortunately, that harness probably won't have the two wires labeled "dash mute" and "dash switch" as shown in my last pic. You will either need to add new pins to the crutchfield harness, or just order the Modifry harness with the DCI for $12 to get everything working correctly.

You can either put it under the seat, or fasten it up in the passenger roll hoop...

i dont know what the hell is going on. but i have it installed in my car. mine is not the 9857 but i think its the 9815? or something 9835.? shit i have to look.

but my post is this. if you guys want to take a look at it. feel free to pop the panels and look. its all done. everything works. saves you guys some trouble.
