That's a question you might want to ask the city, not the moderators/community organizers on a car forum.
During the past year or two, there were a lot of other car groups, such as supras and miatas, who also held their events there and bbq'd. Not saying that they're the ones who ruined it for everyone else, but the city decided to make the permits a requirement for their own reasons.
Last year's meet was at Sonoma for multiple reasons, in which one of the reasons were because of the permit.

That's all I wanted to know. So a permit was not required a few years ago and now it is. Understandable for the concern of getting a permit and doing it legit.

Hi all, the OFFICIAL SF S2000 MEGAMEET will take place at Treasure Island on July 26, 2015 as we have 'always originally' envisioned it to be. One place, one location, to gather as a many S2000 as possible at this space in time, for a nice, friendly, chill, relaxing, mature, professional, memorable experience, for a once-a-year group picture as well as meet new, old friends in the common interest for the S2000 passion, ownership, x-ownership, future owners, and fan s2000 based in general.

I have noticed we keep encountering the same discussion of concern when it comes to whether or not we need a permit to 'meet' at Treasure Island, I do believe we do need it 'if' we were to hold any event whether small or large scale that requires any activities that may lead to fire, injury, wastes, selling products food etc... and/or property damage but after reviewing numerous times over the permit applications and regulations(TI is a private property owned by the NAVY and TIDA(Treasure Island Department Authority), that we are not going to lead to any of those encounters because we are there driving, visiting as public citizens, tourists, touring the island open to the public and causing no harm other than simply being on the island enjoying the weather, taking pictures of the scenic views and meeting new tourists and people like the hundreds of thousands yearly visitors. We are not holding any concerts, festivals, farmer's market or having an autoshow for profit here!! We are simply here to meetup, sightsee and take photos like any ordinary visitors do! Plus, if any driver(s) were to do anything illegal such as cause injury and/or damage property, he/she will have that resolved by their own car insurance provider liability.

NOTICES: Other than that there is a permit application of $500/day for film/photo 'commercial' productions for students but we are not there to making any films or photo 'commercial' productions using any pyrotechnique, fog, stunts, etc...that may lead to fire hazards and/or injuries.

Honestly, I enjoyed the mega meet the most when it was at Sonoma. It was awesome to be on track, albeit at a parade pace, and to be at an actual event where cars do more than sit stationary. Zero debate about permits, accommodations built in, etc

Thank you, Victor, for defining what has always been our mission and goals for the TI Mega Meet. We will stick to the meet as scheduled, at Treasure Island.
