Default My First Car and Build - 04 Silverstone

I got this 2004 Silverstone S2000 in August 2020 as my first car. I had just finished college and had started a real full-time job. For many years I watched the Hot Version touge videos and other similar shows on YouTube, and I always wanted to modify a car. One of my favorite “touge” cars is the J’s Racing Demon King S2000. So, when a clean 81k mile stock S2000 went up for sale near me I decided to buy it. I bought it with the plan to do the J’s Racing Type GT body kit, but the plans changed. I also wanted to Itasha wrap the car. There are a lot more details than that, but anyways…

I drove the car stock for the first 2-2.5 years. I then decided I wanted to start modifying it, but I was too afraid to cut the body. I bought the Voltex bumper, EVS fenders, and Voltex Side Skirts. I planned to just have these parts paint matched to the car. Eventually, I ended up having the whole exterior resprayed and body cut for the ASM flares.

I am also focused on doing a lot of weight reduction. I have removed the A/C, heater, evaporator, heater lines, gutted rear, soft top delete, among other things.

Since this is the first car I’ve modified, there are things that I would have done differently knowing what I do now (still have so much to learn). I also go down rabbit holes on stuff and have a hard time finishing projects.

Here is how the car looked when it was last driving:

Here are the current mods, there might be some other minor stuff. I have also replaced a lot of bolts as I’ve gone along. I’m going to update this more as time goes on and organize it more, but I wanted to finally get a first post out there. Right now, the car doesn’t run because I am trying to do some other projects on it.

That’s a lot of work. Maybe better to forget but you consider the cataloging the parts cost as well as any work you outsourced?

I have a spreadsheet that I try to keep all the parts in. I kept track of the cost of everything in there for a while so I could get an agreed value insurance policy. Once the car is on the road again, I have to add up the cost of the new parts to get a higher agreed value. The biggest cost has been the bodywork, paint, front end PPF, and ceramic coating. I had these done at the same time and it came out to about $18,000 (the horribly fitting fenders didn't help). I have done all the other work myself which has helped save some money.

Hoo boy, you really went wild here! What’s next for it?

What’re some things you’ve learned or would do differently now that time has passed by?

I was looking at photos of the CWest S2000 and they cut out part of the frame rails behind the rear subframe and “tube framed” it. I’ve been thinking about that, mostly because I think it looks cool. My overall plan for the car is to get the weight to around 2450 – 2500 lb and then make more power with a supercharger or NA build. Have to put some more thought into that.

Doing it over again, I would have gone all out on a J’s Racing Type GT or Amuse GT1 build. I didn’t have plans to cut the car up in the beginning which is why I didn’t get a full kit. I don’t think there would have been a huge cost difference in bodywork between those kits and what I eventually did (maybe I’m wrong). I also bought wheel/tires in a size that I could run on a stock body. At some point, I’d like to go to a wider 18” wheel and different brakes. Some other stuff… I originally had a Chargespeed trunk that fit bad. Wish I had just spent the money on the ASM trunk instead of wasting money on that. I didn’t know how flimsy these Tomei exhausts are. Should have spent a little more for an Arvou Titanium exhaust. There is other stuff as well, but that’s what I can think of at the moment
