in a predominantely white sport such as nascar, i would think that some fans would discriminate against hamilton due to his mixed race.
But you know, the first (and so far only) black driver to win a Cup race in NASCAR was 44 years ago, so it's not exactly like F1 is breaking new ground here.
The stroy of that race win is pretty shameful, but it's good to see we have come a long way since then.

Not to change the subject, but we go to two races in LA each year, the February NASCAR 500 miler at California Speedway and the Long Beach GP. The NASCAR fans are all white, many rednecks, many with southern accents. They wear colorful T shirts with their favorite drivers on them and they sit in the stands eyes glued to the track. The LBGP fans are a microcosm of LA: all races, nationalities, and skin colors in every imaginable kind of outfit, some very weird and outrageous. Some are partying pretty hard. The contrast is amazing.

Continuing what I mentioned before, the contrast between Lewis Hamilton and Wendell Scott is also pretty amazing.
Scott was recruited in to NASCAR really to be a token black man. He was his own crew chief and team owner. When he won a cup race in 1963, they made a "scoring error" and announced another driver as the winner of the race. A few days later (when they didn't have to present Scott with a trophy in the winner's circle in front of all the fans), they quietly announced the "error" and listed Scott as the winner of the race.
Contrast that with how Hamilton has been treated this year.

I can't picture Hamilton driving in NASCAR. I could see Montoya doing it since he has that gung ho attitude but Hamilton just wouldn't fit in that crowd.
