I have no basis for knowing this, and it is purely rank speculation on my part. But I think that as the season progessed Kovalainen did remarkably well for Renault, given the limitations of the car and the team's difficulty in adapting the the Bridgestone tires.

Then the 7 time WDC the CHIN is the biggest loser in F1 history, as he had a stipulation in his contract that he could pick his teammate, a definate lessor driver. That is why he and Todt refused to let the President of Ferrari sign Mika Hakkinen in 2000 and why the chin retired once he knew Kimi was joining Ferrari.
