Im about to install a new thermostat, does the coolant need to be flushed out before installation?

Not necessarily but you lose so much coolant pulling the thermostat that it is a good time to replace it.

I wouldn't bother saving a few cents. Just flush it and put new coolant in.

Good idea to put in a new fan switch (lower temperature activate) at the same time.

When I had my overheating problem I drained and refilled the coolant so many times I would have caused an environmental hazard if I'd have replaced it every time.

There is a tap in the bottom of the radiator.

Drain there and then disconnect the bottom radiator hose.

That should get it all out.
