Got it back today, after 2.5 days in the shop.

3 hours of labour @ 99.50 = $298.50
why they need 2.5 days while the actual time they working on your car is only 3hrs, hmm maybe apprentice mech working on your S, I still prefer Hannys then Honda dealer since most of the staff is apprentice mech

Damn! That's an expensive list.

It looks like they replaced the whole system. Just to make sure that they did the job, I would ask for all of the old parts Dave.
Too late for that

0.5 days to get around to looking at it.
1 day to wait for the parts to come up from Melbourne
0.5 days to do the work.
0.5 days to do my 130,000 service and the wheel alignment.

If these guys are still apprentices they are very slow learners.
Most look to be in their thirties and they all look like the same guys I have seen there on each visit in the last 3 years.

The service advisor says it is the first time they have to replace a steering rack on any car, yet they had a Civic come in the same day that also needed a replacement steering rack.

i just got off the phone with Peter from Hanny's , he is AMAZED that it is requires a new steering rack . As with all the S2000's he's worked on , he's never had to replace the entire rack and guess's there is a problem somewhere that needs to be found after an inspection and highly doubts the WHOLE rack needs replacing.

As for the age and kms of Dave's car , it says its very unlikely it needed such a dramatic fix .

But how long would that inpection take and cost?
And if he disassembled it and needed parts, would they be obtainable - seems not from Hornsby Honda's story.

I expect the root cause it is all of the potholes I drive through daily on such major roads as the Pacific Highway and Warringah Expressway.

OT: If Rudd would promise to fix the roads I just might vote for him.

sometimes from a dealer perspective would be easier for them to just replace the entire thing rather than trying to troubleshoot the problem. thats just what i think.

common problems on Honda cars ... Brake master cyclinder / clutch master , they all leak over time , Honda would make you replace it rather than a simple fix of just changing the seals .

well, if i rang ahead and spoke to the owner (Rob) told him my good mate Dave was coming down , he wouldnt charge for an inspection - even if it was extensive, they would take the time and use their experience to see what is the cause of the problem , test drive the car etc. As for parts , they exclusively services honda's only , so they can get hold of any part that are needed . He just though it was strange, as he has over 10yrs experience working on Honda cars and not once he had to replace a steering rack .

hmm , my first CRX had about 140,000kms on it , and it was lowered on massively oversized rims and there was never any problems with the steering.
