Steering rack replacement
My steering started developing problems over the last week (felt notchy - like ABS in an all-out stop) and I took the car in to Honda today. The entire steering rack needs to be replaced. Cost is $2700 including labour! This is the most expensive non-warranty item I have had in my 5.5 years and 130000 kms of ownership.
I am not complaining since I think that something is bound to give after that amount of time. Also it might have been affected by some damage I had a while back that wrecked the front suspension on the passenger side - although that was over 2 years ago.
Anyone else had problems with the steering rack?

take it to hannys in smithfield. would be alot cheaper than what you got quoted.
it might not even need replacing. might just be a small fix. one of the reasons i dislike honda dealerships is the bs they give you.

2) Getting to and from Smithfield would put a big dent in a couple of my days
3) It sure felt broken - I dont think the chance of them doing it in a simpler way was high
4) I would not want a patch-up job - safety is more important.
5) I can have it back by the end of tomorrow this way.
6) I did ask about simpler options. The service advisor, whom I have known for 4 years, sounded convincing.

When I got it back new in 2002 I thought I would only have it a year or two.
But now I can't see myself ever wanting to part with it - although if money wasn't important I would be happy to switch to a current one.

My time is worth quite a bit and so is peace of mind.
Saving money on repairs is not that important.

But I haven't got the time to go chasing things like that up.
And I cannot do it myself so I need someone to do it.
It would be better if Honda would offer to do that for me, including sourcing the part - just as my Holden dealer has fitted reconditioned alternators and other such parts.
One-stop shopping.
Being a company-owned car, at least it is tax-deductible.
