Default Silver cars are safer to drive

A bit of interesting trivia on car colours.

It seems silver is the safest colour to drive and there's not much hope for the rest of us

Sounds like April Fool's Day has come early.

In the article there is absolutely no mention at all about how they conducted this "study", what data was used or how they arrived at their conclusion. Similarly, no data about the composition of the NZ fleet by colour.

I suspect there is some seriously flawed logic involved.

The silver vehicles were probably Benz's and they're built to save the passengers.

Maybe safer drivers choose silver cars (because they are less flamboyant personalities). The conclusion that it's the fact that the car is silver that makes it safer doesn't follow. Just because two facts coexist doesn't imply cause and effect. Increasing the number of silver cars on the road won't increase safety.

Has there ever been a silver Falcon or a silver commodore? I don't recall ever seeing any silver ones.

If the two biggest selling cars don't have a silver model that would tend to distort the statistics somewhat.

Maybe it is just the bad drivers in the area or something, but I found with my current car and previous car (both silver) I would always get other drivers doing silly things like pulling out in front of me as if they didn't see me. 3

Maybe I should just get a really loud exhaust so that they can hear me coming way before seeing me?

A quote from the article posted on www.newscientist.com:

"Metallic finish cars, such as silver ones, are more expensive, but Furness does not believe this is an important factor. "From these controlled data it seems unlikely that the explanation for silver cars being associated with a lower risk of car crash injury is related to the price or 'quality' of the vehicle," she told New Scientist."

Personally, I would have thought that the price & quality of a car have got more to do with vehicle safety than almost any other factor.
