Secret ethanol tests find stations breach safety levels

'Confidential testing by the federal environment department has found that almost one in 10 service stations is selling ethanol-laced fuel, most at levels that car makers warn can damage engines and void manufacturers' warranties.'

It appears independent service stations, particularly in Sydney and Wollongong are the main culprits according to Environment Minister, David Kemp.
'The federal cabinet has yet to decide whether it will introduce a 10 per cent limit on ethanol content. It is also under pressure from the sugar and biofuel industries to introduce a mandatory minimum ethanol content in petrol, beginning at 2 per cent.'
Well, it's obvious some service station operators simply can't be trusted. Why aren't I suprised? The only short term solution or safeguard I can see is to not use independant service stations at all and hope that the big companies are still doing the right thing by us by not using ethanol.
Screw the sugar industry as well. I'll boycott sugar and switch to bloody sacharin I think.

It doesn't say which service station brands were tested. The Herald went to independent ones but the Government is keeping quiet about whether they tested both branded and independent.
