Talk to your insurance company. Often the policy stays current for around 30 days after the policy renewal date. If you intended to extend the policy they may let you pay and make a claim.

I forgot to renew my home insurance over the Christmas break many years ago. The townhouse got comprehensively cleaned out by burglars. The NRMA just asked me for a declaration stating that I intended to renew and was financially able to renew and they allowed me to pay the renewal retrospectively. They explained that the policy was still current with the underwriters for a month after their renewal date.
