OK, he lost control at 180kph+. Still is that the speed of the impact? Hitting something at 180kph+ is very extreme .... usually when you're on the track and hit something, you are usually travelling at pretty low speeds (ie. less than 60kph) even though you could have lost control at 180kph+

For example, I saw once a WRX loose control at 100kph+ and he hit a wall. Though when he hit the wall he was barelly doing 5kph so the damage was relative to 5kph impact.

David,

1) How effectively do brakes work when you're aquaplaning?

2) How much speed will 5m of wet grass wash off?

I didn't realize that the Porsche slid only for a short period of time before it hit the tyre wall. I was pressuming that the Porsche lost it, went out of cotrol, slid for ages and eventually hit the tyre wall. Though, from what you say that does not seem to be the case. That must have been a huge impact.

He was coming down the straight at around 180 kph, went under the bridge just past the start-finish line, and lost it. The car turned 90 degrees and went across the grass( 5 metres) and impacted the rubber tyre barrier with the right front quarter at unabated( or more !!) speed. The initial impact spun the car around vigorously, the right rear then impacted and the car continued to spin back onto the track.
It was a mess !!!
