S2000 in Motor PCOTY 2003
#13
That's the Aus standard. Two people on board and half a tank of petrol if I remember correctly.
And average of best runs in both directions .... though, I'm not sure if they bothered in PCOTY as they did have 22 cars there. They do say that is their standard though for the usual tests.
Anyway, here's some more numbers to put the S2000's numbers in perspective:
0-100kph:
- Cooper S = 7.82
- Audi S3 = 6.82
- Jaguar S-Type-R = 6.36
- S2000 = 6.36
- XR6-Turbo = 6.24
- Monaro CV8 = 6.06
- Elise 111s (116kW) = 6.04
- Boxster S (191kW) = 5.48
- WRX STi = 5.43
- HSV GTS = 5.24
- SL55 AMG = 4.90
- Viper = 4.34
400m:
- Cooper S = 15.68 @ 148.7kph
- Audi S3 = 14.75 @ 152.8kph
- Jaguar S-Type-R = 14.58 @ 158.4kph
- S2000 = 14.53 @ 158.2kph
- XR6-Turbo = 14.35 @ 160.2kph
- Elise 111s (116kW) = 14.30 @ 152.6kph
- Monaro CV8 = 14.03 @ 166.0kph
- Boxster S (191kW) = 13.7 @ 164.8kph
- WRX STi = 13.62 @161.9kph
- HSV GTS = 13.36 @ 177.8kph
- SL55 AMG = 12.90 @ 179.7kph
- Viper = 12.30 @ 192.4kph
1000m:
- Cooper S = 28,32 @ 189.7kph
- Audi S3 = 26.96 @ 197.1kph
- Elise 111s (116kW) = 26.50 @ 200.0kph
- Jaguar S-Type-R = 26.36 @ 202.5kph
- S2000 = 26.12 @ 209.0kph
- XR6-Turbo = 25.90 @ 202.2kph
- Monaro CV8 = 25.70 @ 209.2kph
- WRX STi = 25.15 @207.2kph
- Boxster S (191kW) = 24.95 @ 213.3kph
- HSV GTS= 23.83 @ 231.5kph
- SL55 AMG = 23.32 @ 229.0 kph
- Viper= 22.03 @ 246.0kph
Top Speed (4000m):
- Cooper S = 220kph
- Elise 111s (116kW) = 227kph
- XR6-Turbo = 234kph (limited)
- WRX STi = 235kph (limited)
- Audi S3 = 237kph
- S2000 = 246kph
- SL55 AMG = 252kph (limited)
- Jaguar S-Type-R = 253kph
- Boxster S (191kW) = 256kph
- Monaro CV8 = 270kph
- HSV GTS = 275kph
- Viper = 295kph
Winton lap times by Cameron McConville:
- Cooper S = 1:47.97
- Audi S3 = 1:47.63
- XR6-Turbo = 1:46.28
- Commodore SV8 = 1:45.37
- Jaguar S-Type-R = 1:45.22
- S2000 = 1:44.09
- WRX STi = 1:43.75
- Monaro CV8 = 1:43.69
- HSV GTS = 1:43.44
- Boxster S (191kW) = 1:42.09
- SL55 AMG = 1:41.22
- Elise 111s (116kW) = 1:41.12
- Viper = 1:38.44
btw, all the laptimes done this year, last year and year before are done by CM so they somewhat comparable. Still, just taking the times from this year check out the BoxsterS numbers ... 2sec quicker around Winton!! OK, it has 225/265 rubber on it and that certainly helps, but still that car is very quick ... S2000 needs RE540s tyres to match that. That time is on par with EVO6 and M3 from last year.
And how about that 116kW Elise ... that thing flies at Winton (3secs quicker that the S2000). The 'basic' Elise is enough to match the S2000 at Winton as it did a high 1:43s last year.
And what about the Monaro CV8 ... those times really blew me away - 0.4sec quicker than S2000 around Winton (how is that?!?) ... odd thing is that last year they managed 1:44.8 so that is an imptrovemnet of 1.2secs .... kind of odd as the other repeated cars are within few 10ths. And that 270kph top speed!!
Also once on the move, the S2000 is a good match for the new STIs - I've been noticing this for a while but here some decent proof. Same goes for around the track ... whatever the STi can do, the S2000 should be able to match. Last year STi managed 1:43.60 so pretty consistent.

That Viper is one evil machine!!!!
It is that far ahead of the field that they should have had it in a test of its own
How come the STi only just managed to beat the S2000 in the lap time? I would have expected it to whoop the S2000's butt.
The Elise beat everything in the field except the Viper in lap time

Guys just to refresh your memories the YellaFella did a 1.44 on stock SO2s and a best time of 1.42 on 540s at Winton last year. I'm sure not a pro driver so I think this speaks very well of the S2000.
Who is coming to Phillip Island with the Ferrari Club this Sunday?

Why would you expect it to be quicker than the S2000? Afterall the S2000 has a better weight to power ratio and is 200kg lighter. From my own on-the-track experience a well-driven (new) STi can't get away from the S2000 on the straight or in the corners ... and vica versa.
Then again with $5 - 7k of tuning to the STi, that thing will leave the S2000 so far behind that it's not even funny.
That Viper is one evil machine!!!!
As far as the Viper goes that thing is lethaly quick. The laptimes actually are better then what I would have expected despite it's power. The only cars in the last 3 years that CM has piloted around Winton quicker are 911 GT2 and 911 Turbo. And even with that we're talking only about 1sec.

Even the 'plain' (89kW) Elise flies around Winton ... last year it returned 1:43.88. Winton is very big on turns and very short on straights. On the four straight stretches of road there you reach about 120kph, 145kph, 165kph and 130kph ... so you can't get too much of an advantage on the straights (unlike Sandown).

Holdens, Fords, BMW's and Porsches time and time again. I think they have a distinct dislike for the S2000 - probably because it is a real sports car and not a whoos machine like the ones they seem to favour. They remark on it's twitchyness etc - perhaps they should learn to drive !!
I am thinking of cancelling my subscription also due to the boredom/bulls..t factors.

They do seem to like the Elise though ... there's not much negative press on the car even though I have read the odd one where the writeup is not all praises. You'd figure if they like that then they'd like the S2000 too.
From what I gether they can't get past the rear-suspension and to be honest I've spent the last 2 years trying to get the best out of it (without actually replacing amy parts in it). It's not eazy and even then it's never perfect (at least not for me).
Besides that it's the same old story about lack of accelerative urge when in city/public road conditions. Which is true, but they don't seem to realize that if you want to you can drive around the town with your revs around 6000rpm .... I do it sometimes and the car does not mind at all; it just takes a while to get your brain used to trating the engine like you would on a motor-bike.
Also I've read the track-test part of the PCOTY'03 and I can't help but agree with their comments about the S2000 there. In a way they say that the reason for 'only' 1:44 time is because of the lack of grip from the rear-end. It's slow in, fast out for the S2000 while it's so close to being fast in, fast out car .... all but the rear-end are set for that. I don't necessarily agree with the 'slow in' part, but the entry speed for me is limited by the grip of the rear-end ... always has been. I'm sure you've heard me say before that I could go a lot quicker if I had more grip at the back.

But wouldn't some wider tyres at the rear and some more negative camber give you improved grip at the rear to a fair degree?
Not sure if there is any conclusive evidence that the rear end is changed on the AUS delivered cars on 02+ models that can be qualified by Honda though. UK sources suggest that anti-roll bar thickness, damper rates and alignments have changed to give a more settled rear end though nothing is mentioned in Aussie press?!?! You are right however in that the Aussie motoring press mention the rear end being imperfect in nearly every write-up on the car....
