Sorry to hear (and see) wilch. Something very similar happened to me a few years ago; waiting a few cars back from the traffic lights then BANG. The other party were very cooperative and were insured with NRMA. We exchanged details (rego, license and contact numbers). I called Shannons and they took care of the rest. I think you only have to report to police if you estimate the total property damage to be greater than $x, injuries and fatalities aside

Tough luck Wilch!

I had the same happen to me in the US. I was waiting to turn at the lights, saw a guy slow down to queue behind me, saw him reach for something, I figured he was pretty much stopped then so took my eyes off the rear view mirror and then BANG!

The fool could not reach his CD case so he stepped on the gas for support... he was a P plater and pleaded with me to settle off the books. I talked to his Dad and they could barely afford insurance as it was so with a claim it meant no insurance/job etc. A real sad story. Fortunately they were honest enough to pay for the repairs (which were much less than yours) directly.

And not having your car for 5 days is a pain in the rear end (pun!)

I think you did the right thing by notifying the police. You should keep records of everything just in case you have any troubles with the insurance company involved. You never know these days.
