Price for '04 S2000

When the s2000 first came out it was only about $65K brand new. Maybe that is where the difference ($7K) on Blacks2k's post is.

Incorrect - it was $69,900 when it was first released back in '99. It then went up to $74,900 mid-late 2000 (a bit before I bought mine ).

OK, I've got an offer for a new 2004 for $70,000 all up. That includes the price of the car, GST, dealer charges, government charges, rego, and stamp duty. The only thing extra is car insurance. No options at all - I suspect I'll be hitting Muz' online store soon for those floormats

The broker I'm dealing with used the term "built in 2004 and complianced in 2004". Not sure what that terminology meant, but he said it's very recently built, likely on a ship now, would be diverted to me based on my colour choices, and take 6-8 weeks for delivery.

I've seen 2 late model (2003) S2K's on the various car websites: 8,096 kms for $67,990 and 3,500 kms for $69,990. Of course I would haggle from there. But, with all the gov't charges included in the quote above, it seems like a good deal to me. Even if I haggle the used cars down to say $60,000, I'd have additional gov't charges after that if I bought used vs. the above quote. Seems to me I'm getting the 2004 upgrades for $5-8K more over a 2003 model. Of course I'd save more money going 2002 with more km's.

The dealer itself is Tynan Motors, although I would get service done closer to my home.

Whadaya think? Should I proceed? or

You need to check whether it is the "new" 2004 model. I don't know which month the upgrade was released but the first one into Australia only made it a few days before the Melbourne Motor Show in March.

It could be that one with a January or February build plate might still be the 'old' model.

The precise question that will sort this out for you is "Does it have the 17 inch wheels?"

If it really is the 2004 upgrade model (with 17" wheels) then $70,000 all-up is a good deal. However, if it has the 16" wheels, then it's a superceded model and $70,000 is only just OK.

Yep - good point RedRover. scott2k did mention "very recently built, likely on a ship now" though which would mean that it is definitely a MY04. Either way it's worth asking the question!

it astonishes me that the dealer seemingly can't tell you whether it's the new model

if it isn't the new model, and it's $70k, don't buy it. get the new model instead.

if it is the new model, and it's $70k, still don't buy it. any offer the dealer makes is always a sucker punch. haggle, make them an offer and threaten to walk if you don't get the deal. they'll come down.

End of the day fisty everyones got to make a dollar, and unlike you I don't believe in asking them to bend over just to do it.

Yep, fair point. When I buy a $75k car though, I think it is only fair that the dealer makes a little bit of a margin (ie maybe a couple of $k).
