I think CKY has it right. The JDM Type R would have been at S2000 pricing.
Rather than dumbing down the performance they should have reduced the size. What I mean by that is they shouldn't have bothered with the new Integra Type R and should have brought in the Civic Type R. I think many of us here and our ilk would jump at a hot Civic like that.

Hear hear.
You gotta remember, with our dollar so low, good cars are really expensive here. We are not at all a 'normal' market like the US or Europe where excellent cars are in reach of even modest wage earners.
Instead of trying to fool us with badges, it would have been better to come clean and offer something a little different (ie Civic Type R)....Oh well...looks like Honda Australia are feeling it anyway, as they are not operating profitably at present, so maybe they'll pull their finger out soon.

I've added some information about your situation to the Short block replacement thread.
What model year is your car? VIN? date of purchase?

On a separate note I'm noticing an oil leak -- I sometimes see oil residue on the engine block.
Any ideas on what I should do? (vs. something vague like "go see a mechanic")
Cheers

Here
Otherwise, yes, see a mechanic.
The tap tap tap at start-up that disappears quickly with warmup IS NORMAL.

Update.
Things are not looking much better.
An engine inspection by an engineer from a reputable independent party. (RACQ - Royal Automotive Club of Queensland) arrived to the conclusion that a loose #2 big end bearing cap retaining bolt was the cause of the engine failure. i forwarded this report to Honda Australia.
They are saying that this bolt was loose/failed because the engine was overreved. WTF?
The valve train is in perfect condition and a CEL has never been triggered.
Furthermore Honda Australia had their own independent inspection done.
Guess what?
They are refusing to forward the results to me. Doesn't it seem like they are hiding something?
