I know that this may sound silly but i had the exact same problem until i had my battery changed.
After putting in the new battery, i never had the fuel gauge problem.
It worked for me...

oh... i had my battery changed about 6months ago .
Its just abit fraustrating .....
but , yeah ... i generally go off the km's these days .
